We’re changing the face and practice of leadership in Chicago.

At Public Allies Chicago, we believe changing times call for a new kind of leadership. Since 1993, we’ve developed more than 400 young leaders. Allies are young, diverse, and passionate social change makers who support  community projects in partnership with hundreds of local nonprofit organizations.

Our Allies change their lives and our community through a rigorous AmeriCorps program that combines full-time, paid apprenticeships in nonprofits with intensive skills training, active community-building projects, personalized coaching, and critical reflection. We provide all of this through a nationally recognized approach that’s rooted in a practice of values.

Everyone leads.. and we walk the talk. In the Class of 2010, our Allies are ages 18 to 30, 74% identify as people of color, 57% are women, 14% are LGBTQ, and 61% are college graduates. Allies are of and for our local community, and they share a deep commitment to strengthening Chicago.

We’re creating pathways for a stronger community and a lifetime of impact. More than half of our alumni continue a career in the nonprofit and public sectors, and about 90% of Alumni say they would participate again if they could. Partner Organizations report that their work with an Ally increases their capacity by up to 30%. In 2008, non-profits hosting an Ally saved over $23,000 as compared to what it would cost to do similar work without Public Allies, saving Chicago's non-profits over $550,000!

Results like these
have led the Public Allies program to be recognized as a model for national service.
