Meet The Allies

We’re changing the face and practice of leadership in North Carolina.

At Public Allies North Carolina, we believe changing times call for a new kind of leadership. Through our signature AmeriCorps program, Public Allies North Carolina identifies talented young adults from diverse backgrounds and prepares them for careers working for community and social change. The North Carolina Institute of Minority Economic Development added Public Allies to its portfolio of programs in 2011. With its mission to "advance diverse, young leaders to strengthen communities," Public Allies aligns with the Institute's  mission to strengthen the asset base of the communities it serves.

 The Public Allies program benefits:

  • Young adults interested in social change.
  • Nonprofit agencies needing the assistance of an additional young staff member.
  • The community as a whole.

Public Allies' mission is to advance new leadership to strengthen communities, nonprofits, and civic participation. We are convinced that lasting social change results when citizens from all backgrounds step up, take responsibility, and work together.

Everyone Leads.

The Ally Experience

Allies are diverse, passionate social change makers who support community projects in partnership with dozens of local nonprofit organizations. Our Allies change their lives and their communities through a rigorous AmeriCorps program that combines full-time, paid apprenticeships in nonprofits with intensive skills training, active community-building projects, personalized coaching, and critical reflection. We provide all of this through a nationally recognized approach that is rooted in our core values: collaboration, integrity, focus on assets, diversity & inclusion, and continuous learning.

The Nonprofit Apprenticeship. As an Ally, you will work full-time at a local nonprofit that matches your interests and skills.  At your nonprofit placement, you might develop and run a food pantry program for hunger-stricken youth, organize a community economic development leadership program, build an alumni engagement program for top community leaders interested in social change, or empower youth from rural communities to become emerging leaders through skill development workshops. We recruit new Partner Organizations every year—the possibilities are endless.

Continuous Learning. Once a month, you will come together with Allies from around the state to participate in professional trainings focused on leadership development, self-discovery, and key issues affecting North Carolina.  Training topics include social entrepreneurship and social change; the legislative process in North Carolina; health disparities in underserved populations; closing the achievement gap; personal leadership style; diversity; asset-based community development; community organizing; group process, and many more.

The Team Service Project. Once a week, you will meet with Allies across the state to plan, develop, and implement a year-long Team Service Project (TSP).  With support and coaching from staff, you will learn how to work as a team to launch a community project from the ground up.

Ally Benefits:

  • Living stipend of $1,500 per month (taxable)
  • AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,550 upon completion of the program
  • FREE basic health insurance
  • Federal student loan forbearance and interest payment (for eligible loans)
  • Childcare available to eligible participants
  • Valuable professional training and networking
