We’re changing the face and practice of leadership in Miami

Welcome to Public Allies Miami. 2010 will be our fourth year as a Public Allies site and are excited to place 25 youth leaders in non-profit organizations throughout the county.  Response to our program has been extremely positive.  Given this response, we hope to grow and expand in the coming years.  Public Ally apprentices will help to change the face and practice of local leadership by contributing to the development of the organizations where are placed.  Allies receive intensive ongoing professional development training to prepare them for their roles and host organization representatives are invited and encouraged to participate in this training.

A unique aspect of Public Allies Miami is that many of the host organizations have included the use of Study Circles in their Ally job descriptions. This effective methodology enhances community dialogue, community empowerment and civic engagement. Allies and their supervisors will be trained as facilitators and we estimate that between 300 - 400 community members will participate in these dialogues. Three community engagement summits will support this initiative and provide a venue to bring all participants together over time to create a venue for emerging leaders to voice the outcomes of their dialogues and explore the capacity of the community to bring about assets based changes.

Public Allies is housed at the Human Services Coalition at 1900 Biscayne Blvd, Suite 200, Telephone: (305) 576-5001. Please contact site director Asha Loring (ext. 42) or program managers Marilyn DeArmas (ext. 23) and Santra Denis (ext. 46) for more information about the program and how you can help create a better Miami.
