We’re changing the face and practice of leadership in Milwaukee.
At Public Allies Milwaukee, we believe changing times call for a new kind of leadership. Since 1994, we’ve developed over 400 young leaders. Allies are young, diverse, and passionate social change makers who have supported community projects in partnership with over 125 local nonprofit organizations.
Our Allies change their lives and our community through a rigorous AmeriCorps program that combines full-time, paid apprenticeships in nonprofits with intensive skills training, active community-building projects, personalized coaching and critical reflection. We provide all of this through a nationally recognized approach that’s rooted in a practice of values.
Everyone leads… and we walk the talk. Our Allies are ages 18 to 30+, and over 65% are people of color, over 15% identify as LGBTQ, and 58% are college graduates. Allies are of and for our local community, and they share a deep commitment to strengthening Milwaukee. 95% of Allies upon graduation report that they would participate in the program again if they could.

Public Allies Milwaukee Pilots Emerging Black Male Leaders (EMBL) Project
In 2010-2011, Public Allies Milwaukee, a program of the UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education, worked with community-based nonprofit partner organizations to indentify young African-American men, who have demonstrated emerging leadership qualities and will invest in them for a ten-month period. Specifically, these young black men served as youth workers (EBML Allies) and were provided with the tools and support to facilitate leadership development of local teenagers. The young people that the EBML Allies trained in turn became more informed about the issues facing their communities and how to go about addressing them.
This project is made possible by support from the Open Society Institute, as part of its Campaign for Black Male Achievement.
Become a Public Ally
We’re creating pathways for a stronger community and a lifetime of impact. More than 80% of Alumni continue a career in the nonprofit and public sectors. Annually, 90% of our partner organizations report that they are satisfied with their Ally's work and that their work with an Ally increases their capacity by up to 30%. Results like these have led Public Allies to be recognized as a model for national service.
Public Allies Milwaukee is a program of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education (SCE). The School of Continuing Education is Southeastern Wisconsin's largest provider of continuing education courses, serving over 19,000 individuals annually.
