Welcome to Public Allies! Here you can learn what it takes to become a Public Ally, how that can benefit both you and your community, and how to apply now.
Each year we partner with AmeriCorps to give over 600 diverse individuals in 23 communities an opportunity to join our intensive 10-month program that starts in the fall and runs through summer. Since 1992, more than 5,400 amazing, talented, and committed leaders have changed their lives through our program. You could be next.
When you join Public Allies, you join a national network dedicated to practicing Public Allies’ five core values*. What we seek in all successful applicants is a readiness to take the next step in your professional life, a willingness to learn and grow, and a commitment to stepping up as a leader in your community. We seek applicants who have college degrees, as well as those who don’t. We welcome applicants with extensive work histories, and those who are still exploring a career path. We consider applicants who have no criminal history, as well as those who do.
To participate in the program, individuals must have at least a high school diploma or GED, be a U.S. citizen or have permanent residency, and be at least 17 years of age. Public Allies bases our selection of Ally applicants on core competencies.
If selected, you are placed with a local nonprofit organization and participate in a full-time, paid apprenticeship for 10 months (in some cases you can apply for a second consecutive year with the program). You attend regular skill-building and leadership development sessions with your cohort of Allies, and receive life and professional development coaching along the way. You will use your new leadership skills to help strengthen the organization you are placed with, as well as connect to leaders and organizations in your community to help address real issues.
In addition, AmeriCorps Allies are eligible to receive a monthly stipend of approximately $1,300 to $1,800, access to health care and child care, student loan deferment, and an education award of $5,775 after completing the program to pay back student loans or pay for future education
* Public Allies 5 core values are 1) Diversity/Inclusion; 2) Collaboration; 3) Continuous Learning; 4) Integrity; and 5) Building on Assets
** Each Public Allies site manages their own recruitment process but use the same application. It is important to reach out to the site(s) that you are interested in applying to and talking with staff about their program and processes.
